Why Business Cards Suck

I often get a funny look when people ask me for a business card and I tell them I don't have one. Truth is I have a big box of them in a drawer...somewhere..

I don't believe in them. I think they are the biggest waste of time, ever. I even kind of hate them (just a little). Your business card generally goes into my bin within 24 hours of you handing it to me so why would I expect you to treasure mine?

What is the purpose of a business card?

It is a paper vehicle to transfer contact information.

How do people contact me?

 Digitally.

How do I want people to contact me?

 Digitally.

I will ask you for your email address. I will write it in my notebook and then you will get an email from me that you can save down with all my links (twitter, facebook, posterous, blogger etc).

More importantly, I've got your email and a reason to contact you. Contact information is updated constantly and if I have a website that looks like a dog's breakfast that week I can leave it off. Much better.

As far as I'm concerned all it does it take away the requirement for the use of pen and paper - you glean the data and then throw it away. I don't carry a notebook and it's usually awkward to stand there putting the information directly into my phone.

I tend to opt for both because I am so unorganised.

Digital and business cards: I tend to carry business cards for people who aren't online.

I keep business cards and I have a business card. I think it is largely dependent on your business and clientele. In my last job, I didn't consider business cards important but I was asked for a card every couple of days.

In saying that, would love for a service like dubmenow.com to be available in New Zealand for exchanging business details digitally.
